Monday, the Twenty Seventh of August
by EGOLUS

This is the first "news" for the new site. It's called news now because (apart from the message below) everything is more news based than rant based (and because I was accused of stealing the "rant" idea from id's .rant). The site has a new look now, I hope it's easier on the eyes. All the site graphics are now in GIF format to allow smaller file sizes, while JPG is still used for the rice pictures. Over the next few days or so the site will be gradually upgraded, you will notice that about half the pages are still in the old blue background scheme. Any comments can again be directed to me. FrontPage is the new editor of choice (replacing Netscape Composer) simply because it handles frames better. The top frame is there simply to get the ads off the pages. Anyway, expect more rice in the next week or so.

by anonymous Ausrice supporter

Hi.  The author of Ausrice has decided that my behind the scenes contributions to the site have entitled me to write my own rant.  So I am making my first post on the site.
To me, ricing is when someone takes a crap car and tries to make it look good.  Cars like Charades, Lancers, Excels, etc are budget cars for poor people who can't afford fuel.  They're meant for city travel between one traffic light to the next.  Ricers are stupid because they're rich and they buy a crap car meant for poor people, offset any advantage the car's fuel economy might have by spending thousands on bodykit, exhausts and various bullshit performance parts, and think they're hot shit.  To me, bragging about having a 2l/100km advantage in fuel economy when you've just spent $1000 on a weight and drag increasing bodykit is just plain stupidity.  I won't say what car I drive to remain anonymous.  All I will say is its not a particularly fast or powerful car as far as cars go, but to a ricer, it might as well be a Ferrari.  I understand that the fuel consumption for such a car may not be economically viable for a lot of people, and I can understand why there exists a market for smaller, lower powered economy vehicles.  But when I come up next to some farting Civic with two 6in exhausts, bodykit scraping the ground and "Mugen", "HKS", "Powered by Honda" written all over it.  And I beat him, in a car at least a third of the price of his, without breaking 4000 revs, I can't help but think, what a wanker....
To be a ricer is to ignore many simple, common sense ideas:
-An internal combustion engine gets its power from burning fuel.  A powerful engine is by definition, an engine that burns a lot of fuel. (although the inverse is not always true).
-An economy car is NOT a sports car.
-Just because a car is small and light does NOT mean its fast and handles well.
-The ENGINE makes the car go, NOT the crap you stick on the body.
-THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FWD SPORTS CAR!!!
Basically, I'm just a person with a bit of a passion for cars and driving.  And when I see misled individuals and companies pouring money into something which doesn't contribute anything to their car or driving experience, I get pissed off.  Hopefully, this site helps in some small way to expose the stupidity of this trend and can help kill it off because it is very unhealthy to the auto industry.

More rice. A Nissan EXA and a Honda CRV not that CRV). I've done a couple of beta versions for Version 3 of the site (this is V1 still, V2 was a total mess). However it is now decision time for me. If this site continues to grow, I will need to purchase an upgrade package from 50Megs.com, allowing more bandwidth. We are still OK for about the next month or two, but I need to know if this site is worth it (I have the money, it's about $60US per year). If enough people send support, I'll upgrade and give previews of the new site. Also, we will keep adding rice (we are going to have to back off a tad at the moment). If someone wants to host the site, please let us know. Lastly, there has been a number of complaints regarding ticketing (someone has been handing a few out apparently...). If people are going to do this could they at least read the feedback section.

172 hits in 4 days. Real great since the only hype for the site has been on Yahoo!'s listing and in a computer hardware forum...  Speaking of forums, ours is up and running! You can find it here. My only request at this point in time is that no outright abuse occurs and that language isn't too foul. And also a big sorry goes to everyone, the CRV photo previously mentioned has gone AWOL, so we'll try and get him on the next hunt. Also, a few of the previously mentioned rice rocket photos came out too dark, so we won't be putting them on the site until we brighten them up.

Good news on two fronts!! Firstly we've just been on a successful ricehunt through a large university in Perth and found about 10 Rice Rockets, including a Honda CRV(expect pics soon)!!! Secondly I would like to thank all the people who've visited this site and supported me, we've just clicked over 500 hits!(a small number, I know, but remember I haven't hyped the site anywhere - due to lack of content). If this site continues to grow, I might have to think about upgrading it a bit....
